Townsend Cemetery, Mount Pleasant, Crewkerne

Written by Administrator on 12 February 2013.

It appears that since the Middle Ages the nobility of our hamlets buried their dead in Crewkerne, but now any parishionerTownsend Cemetery of West Crewkerne Parish can be buried in the Municipal Cemetery paying the same cemetery fees as the town parishioners.

To facilitate this arrangement, a Joint Burial Committee was formed with 5 Crewkerne and 3 West Crewkerne councillors to oversee the proper running of the facility by Crewkerne Town Council with the necessary staff. For this privilege our council contribute an appropriate portion of funding, annually agreed, to run the cemetery.

The Committee meets four times a year in the Town Hall Council Chambers (except for the Annual Meeting which is held in the Cemetery Chapel) at 6.45 pm, usually in January, April, June and October, on the 1st Tuesday of the month, and is open to the public.
