West Crewkerne Broadband

Written by Henryk on 12 January 2014.

West Crewkerne is one of those parishes that has suffered in the past with the A30 and the Cathole Bridge Road being dug up, causing traffic disruption, to accomodate the fibre optic main line from Plymouth to Southampton, and then onto London. However, whilst optic highway cables now run through the parish, the copper wire ASDL from Crewkerne Exchange only provides approximately a speed of 2 Mbps to the majority of the parish, and this speed is not likely to improve for several years to come.
Connecting Devon & Somerset
Connecting Devon & Somerset was set up by the two County Councils to provide broadband, from a selection of private companies, but in the end, BT got the contract. Progress is publicized on "Conecting Devon & Somerset" website, which can be accessed by the link below. This roll out when it comes to us will involve and optic cable run from Crewkerne Exchange to two new Green distribution boxes alongside the old one at Hewish cross roads, and the other at Clapton. From these the broadband will revert to the prsent ASDL copper wires.
This website has good information, and a good start is the section "About Us", which gives the project background and expectations. Latest Information is that Cabinet 19 (Hewish/Clapton Road Crossroads) is now active, and providing fast broadband to a small minority in its immediate close range.
